5 Excuses We Make to Avoid Going to Rehab

You really want to get clean and sober. So what is stopping you? Are you afraid of being judged? Can you make the payments? Do you feel that the process will be too long and hard for you? Or do you think that the problem isn’t as bad as everyone around you makes it out to be? You need help whether you think so or not. If you do not get treatment for your addiction, it will only get worse and end up costing you more than you can afford. But why do you make excuses for not going to rehab? You need help. So why are you stopping yourself from doing so? Here are five excuses of why addicts will do anything in their problem to avoid going to rehab.

Public Shame

This is one of the common reasons that addicts will try not to go to rehab. They will think of themselves as failures when they go to rehab. Addicts will believe that their loved ones will turn their backs on them if they learn about their addiction. In their minds, the community will stick up their noses and label with the mark of shame for even thinking about going to rehab. It is not just with addiction. Society has taught us to look down upon mental illness in general. According to the Mayo Clinic, the negative effects of stigma include: reluctance to seek help or treatment, lack of understanding by family, friends, co-workers or others, fewer opportunities for work, school or social activities or trouble finding housing, bullying, physical violence or harassment, health insurance that doesn’t adequately cover your mental illness treatment, and the belief that you’ll never succeed at certain challenges or that you can’t improve your situation. But it does not have to be this way. Do not be afraid to go to rehab. Your family, friends, and neighbors will be there to support you. They want you to get better just as much as you do.

Lacking in Funds

Addicts will believe that they do not have the money to pay for their treatments. They worry that they don’t have the insurance to cover costs. If they do have insurance, then they might not be able to cover the cost. The addict has built up in their mind that they would have to be someone rich and famous to pay for treatment. They think that their income will not be enough to pay for rehab. It cannot be as expensive as the drugs that they keep paying to put into their bodies. In fact, Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act has mad getting the help that much easier to afford. Also, there are rehab programs that will cost you little or nothing at all. In fact, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration says in their Frequently Asked Section on their website,

The referral service is free of charge. If you have no insurance or are underinsured, we will refer you to your state office, which is responsible for state-funded treatment programs. In addition, we can often refer you to facilities that charge on a sliding fee scale or accept Medicare or Medicaid. If you have health insurance, you are encouraged to contact your insurer for a list of participating health care providers and facilities.

So, you can still get help with ease.

Belief that You Don’t Really Need Help

Sometimes, you just do not want to admit that you need help. You think that your addiction is not as serious as others think. You think that you can quit at any time that you want. You do not see yourself as an addict. While some of these are true for some substance abusers, it is not true for all of them. The first step to getting help is to admit that you have a problem. Even if you are a functioning addict, it does not hurt to get the help that you need. It is better to stop the addiction in its tracks early on before it gets worse. Whether you want to believe it or not, addiction is a progressive disease that will get out of hand when left unchecked. Please just admit that you have a problem and get help as soon as possible.

Uncertain Future

Once you get out of rehab, where will you go? You might have lost your job while in treatment. Maybe you lost your home. Will you be able to stay sober when you get out of treatment? There are many questions for when you get out of rehab. Do not worry. There are places you can turn to that will help you get back on your feet. There are sober living houses you can stay in. Support groups will be there to help you form a plan. The website Start Your Recovery offers tips like joining support groups, recovery checkups in-person or by phone, and/or drug testing and feedback. Life after rehab does not have to be a nightmare. You can make it in society. You just have to put in the work.

Dependency

Some addicts just cannot see their lives without their drug of choice. They see it as their escape from their problems. The drug of choice is the coping mechanism that they know. In their mind, if the addict goes to rehab, they have nothing left to help keep their lives together. There are better ways to cope with your problems. Going to rehab will get to the root of your addiction help you win back some control in your life. It might even help you to deal with your problems while in rehab.
