If you are struggling with addiction, it’s important that you find the right type of help not just for your initial treatment but for ongoing care. This can come in the form of support groups, sober activities, and other community resources for addiction.

What Are Community Resources for Addition?

Community resources for addiction are any resources that help you with your recovery, usually including support groups not just for yourself but for your loved ones, as well as community groups that support sobriety with sober activities or clubs, even church groups that provide ongoing support.

These are places you can turn to as soon as you leave your initial treatment program to bolster your outpatient care program, like support groups that you can continue to attend on a weekly basis after you leave an inpatient program.

These are also places that you can turn to for recreation and socialization, incorporating sober activities, faith, and other aspects of life important to you in your recovery plan.

Examples of Community Resources for Addiction

So, what are some common examples of community resources that you might find in your area?

Support Groups

The most common are support groups. These are meetings that you will participate in, hopefully on a weekly basis or whenever you feel the need as you progress in your recovery. These are a way to extend the ongoing support and sobriety you learned while in treatment and to connect you with people in the community to whom you can turn, especially when you are struggling.

  • AA has a “Find A.A. Near You feature, so you can find community resources in your area as well as family support groups from AA
  • The NA website offers support groups that you can whittle down based on preference in your area or any area where you happen to be, and these include groups for yourself or family, as well as virtual meetings
  • SMART Recovery has a “Find a SMART Meeting” for those who want an alternative support group in their community

These are programs in which you’ll generally participate while you are in recovery, making it an easeful transition when you return back to your regular community.

State Community Resources for Addiction

Each state provides different resources for finding support and other helpful resources, like the NY state Musical Pathways to Recovery program created by a peer recovery advocate.

With Multi-Concept Recovery, you can find access to community resources like these in your area, with information more specific to where you plan to reside after treatment.

Sober Activity Groups

Depending on where you are, you’ll also find access to sober activity groups. These are local community groups that might operate out of a community center, offering opportunities to come together with other people in recovery to participate in things like:

  • Hiking groups
  • Radio clubs
  • Softball teams

If you look around at the available resources in your area and you don’t see a sober group that you like or you don’t see a lot of opportunities for sober activity groups, be proactive about it and start one. You might be surprised to find that people you have met in your support groups would very much like to participate.

Religious Community Resources

You can also access religious community resources that make it possible to find ongoing support with things like virtual treatment or individual therapy sessions. Some churches will provide members with 12 weeks of free individual therapy as well as access to ongoing recovery programs that center the support you receive in faith.

Getting Help from Multi-Concept Recovery

At Multi-Concept Recovery, our goal is to provide reliable care for all of our clients from start to finish. While a comprehensive residential program is often best for those struggling with severe addiction, it’s important to know where to access ongoing community resources after that program ends.

Our goal is to provide customized inpatient or outpatient treatment to those who are struggling with addiction and mental health issues, respecting the fact that a one-size-fits-all approach to recovery won’t cut it. That’s why we incorporate things like EMDR, motivational interviewing, CBT, DBT, and relapse prevention therapy to help you create a firm foundation from which you can access community resources for ongoing support.
